How Ai RP Works and What to Expect

Everyone is talking about this new friend of theirs. They seem to talk all the time, and even though it’s been a short time, they share all their deepest secrets and insecurities. The friends you’ve had for years seem closer to this new person than they do to you. Why is that? What went wrong? You may be surprised to find out, when they invite you to meet this new friend, that they only exist on their phone.

AI Roleplay Chat is not just a fad, it’s a new wave of technology crashing into us from the future. Lifelike chatbots are holding conversations with weeks - or even months - to draw back from. These aren’t NPCs with a few canned lines. The new chatbots can understand emotion and intonation, can read and even deliver sarcasm. They’re made to become your new best friends with no complications. Or perhaps, no complications as far as you can see…

How Modern AI Works

The term “AI” is being used a lot, so it is important to get specific. What we are seeing pop up so often are LLMs, or Large Language Models. These are the basis of an AI engine, which handles information spread across datasets accessed by a hyper-fast neural network. This essentially allows an application like ChatGPT (which stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer) to pick out pieces of text from a library of words based on context and string them together into a sentence.

Which is kind of close to Talking. As a Human, we learn words, assign definitions to those words in our brain, and when we need to communicate we pick the words out from a massive list in an order that makes sense to form sentences. It sounds less impressive when you’ve been doing that all your life with little effort, but no computer until now has had the ability to even come close to doing that.

AI has become strikingly similar to human thinking now. There are still things it can’t do, but as far as holding a conversation, all the pieces are assembled for the digital machine to transform your words into the next part of a conversation. So now instead of using broken words and commands in a search bar, you can ask it a question and get an answer the way a human might explain it to you.

The key difference is the answer comes from a brain that is connected to the internet and its billions of terabytes of knowledge from decades and all across the world. You can have a conversation with the equivalent of the world’s smartest human multiplied by a million and actually understand the answer.

Most of the time.

Early Learning

If you ask someone for a recipe, they may get a measurement wrong, say teaspoon when they mean tablespoon, and not catch themselves doing it. Could be just a flub from a long day, but it was an honest mistake. If you ask an AI for a recipe, it will give you exact measurements based on many, many pieces of data compared to each other from thousands of versions of that recipe. It may also give you ingredients that have gone extinct since the recipe was first used 6,000 years ago.

AI is susceptible to “hallucinations” where it finds a blank in its response and decides to fill it in with whatever it can find. It doesn’t know that it’s wrong. It can’t even understand what wrong is. As long as the data it adds to its final answer doesn’t clash with the rest of the data, it won’t know that it sent you something wrong at all. It’s an issue that has already had surprising effects when used in professional or industrial settings. For just chatting though? A few hallucinations won’t make a difference.

When it comes to Roleplay, making things up can actually add to the experience. As long as you aren’t asking it to be a teacher, you can let it slip in whatever random facts it finds. The main thing to keep in mind is consistency. AI Chatbots can keep information you give them for as long as they need it. Many services offer subscriptions so your favorite character will remember what you tell them for a long time. They might even recall it faster than you. So expect to talk with something that has a great memory, but also a habit to make things up to save face.

Not too different from talking to a normal person.

Handling Your Future With AI

Roleplay chatting has taken off as a pastime for many. There are so many services to choose from, but all of them rely on the same framework. They are all using the same brand new technology, so expect a few bugs along the way as things smooth out. In the meantime, you can enjoy it as a fun hobby or keep a conversational personal assistant in your pocket that knows more about you than your “real” friends do.
